This is kind of a tie-in to what Tim was talking about in a recent post, but I thought I'd post this article since it has to do with military stuff, which means its awesome, and because I think this issue in particular came up in class recently. As we heard from our friends over at the Air Force Museum, they lost out on the bid for the test shuttle
Enterprise to the USS Intrepid Museum in New York. The shuttle went on display earlier this year, but unfotunately, they seem to not have taken the possibility of a hurricane hitting the city into account. The shuttle was being housed in one of those inflatable semi-permanent facilities. Apparently, the inflation motors lost power during the hurricane, which cause the structure to deflate. According to the museum, there was no damage to the Shuttle or any of the other aircraft on the ship, but the museum will be closed until repairs can be made. It's probably pretty fortunate for the museum that the hurricane was only a Category 1 and not something stronger. In retrospect, it seems like considering bad weather should have ranked a bit higher when finding a place for the Shuttle. I'm sure the Air Force Museum guys are wishing that they had included some bit about no exposure to the hurricanes in their proposal now. Anyways, the full article can be seen here:
