Whilest looking for articles for another assignment I found an article about a new exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum about the impact that the Civil War had on American art. This is a one of a kind exhibition because it is the only major exhibit to examine this impact. Many of the artists represented were contemporaries and created their work when it was unclear who would win the war and how long it would last. Their art captures the emotion of the time and give a new perspective on the Civil War. One of their educational programs is a curriculum that goes along with exhibit that makes students look at the war through art instead of just learning the "standard" facts.
Apart from paintings, the exhibit also shows some photographs from the war. During the Civil War, photography was still very young and this war was the first to be brought into the homes of civilians. People could see the nature and destructiveness of war. That definitely impacted the home-front I'd say. It looks like it's a cool exhibit and there are some online materials to get a look at some of the pieces.
