Social Media as Tools for Instruction

As a part of popular culture, social media has made an impact on movements and events such as Presidential Elections. These web tools are also used to help bring excitement to the classroom. There are various resources/sites online that take advantage of using creativity to inspire learning to broader audiences. On YouTube there is a channel created by a high school history teacher in Hawaii named Amy Burvall. In her spare time she rewrites the lyrics to popular songs that reflect the material she teaches in her classroom. She dresses up in costumes and and sings the songs she wrote. Currently she has over 50 uploads.  Here is her channel:  History for Music Lovers

   Cleopatra ("Fergilicious" by Fergie)

Black Death ("Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani)

Another interesting channel on YouTube features drunk historians (played by celebrities such as Don Cheadle, Jack Black and Michael Cera) as they narrate historical events and the impact it made on the country as well as race relations. The channel is: DrunkHistory

  1. I watched a few of the history music videos, and they are surprisingly catchy! They kind of remind me of schoolhouse rock. I would have loved to be in one of Burvall's classes as a teenager. Definitely a creative use of social media in the classroom.

I tried watching one of the drunk history videos, but then the drunk historian started puking and I couldn't take any more. It's all fun and games until somebody pukes.
