From Hieroglyphs to Pinterest and back in time for lunch

Some of you may not know that we homeschool our kids, well, it’s more of a public charter school, but we do it at home and we are the teachers.  Today I was teaching the first grade Hieroglyphs lesson, this is the fifth time I have taught it, and I thought about something interesting.  The only reason we know as much about the Ancient Egyptians as we do is because they write absolutely everything down.

Everything, even the food they ate.  I read that and it got me thinking about the modern world, Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.  I have never really understood or enjoyed the numerous posts about people’s meals or other completely mundane information, but when thought of in this context, someday we will be the ancient people that archeologists and historians want to learn more about!  Of course this brings us back to the usual longevity argument of digital diaries, and the existence of a purely electronic historical record, but that’s not my point here.  My point is far less innocuous, I may just have to stop complaining about all those food pictures and start pinning more mundane information than I previously considered necessary for a happy digital life.  And perhaps more of you will as well!  Don’t forget to try to keep some physical copies though, just in case of that common concern of solar flares!
