Fejee Mermaid

It never ceases to amaze me the things that people will create to make a profit.  PT Barnem is one of the greatest showmen.  I was watching a program on BBC America called Mysteries at the Museum.  The Mead Art Museum had in its collection something very unusual, a Fejee Mermaid.  The curator of the museum determined that it was fake, no surprise there but it is still unclear how this piece came to the museum.  They know the university nearby had it before 1890, but they still don't know where it came from. PT Barnem had a piece of the same name in his American Museum before his collection was destroyed in a fire.  The question now is whether or not this is the same Fejee Mermaid from Barnem's show.  I guess all museums have a few mystery pieces that could have great value.  It's a really cool show.  I'd recommend watching it.  Does anyone have any other weird pieces they've seen or heard about in museums or archives?

  1. The Mütter Museum and its medical oddities comes to mind. I've never been, but whenever I make it to Philadelphia it's at the top of my list.
