Human Ingenuity

I seem to be pretty busy today.  Human creativity also never ceases to amaze me.  I have seen life-size statues made out of Lego pieces and prom dresses and suits made out of duct tape.

When I was watching Mysteries at the Museum, there was a segment on a simple box that looked like a filter.  It was a filter from the Apollo 13 mission.  The story is well known that while on the mission, the oxygen tank on the craft exploded and an astronaut uttered the famous phrase, "Huston, we've had a problem."  To reduce the rising levels of CO2 in the cabin, engineers back on Earth devised a way to make the square filters on the shuttle fit into the circular one's in the lunar craft.  They used duct-tape as a key component.  It worked and saved the astronauts' lives.

In another example, I have read an article about an engineering senior who used LEGO pieces to stabilize the chest cavity of a Egyptian cartonnage mummy case so conservators could restore it and make it safe to display.

These are fine example of human ingenuity and simple materials to solve all sorts of problems.
