I found probably the coolest website on the face of the planet today. It takes a while to get through it, but it is completely worth it.
It's called Welcome to Pine Point, and it follows the story of a small Canadian town and its tragedies and triumphs.
It is so engaging because of its interactive nature -- you can click through the story at your own pace. Interviews from townspeople and photographs and videos complete the story. This is a great way to present online exhibits, or oral histories. The authors of the site said it started out as a book, but they turned it into this website, which reaches a wider and more diverse audience.
With all our quibbles surrounding technology this semester, I think this is a great way to use it for good, and not for evil.
This is awesome and profoundly sad. I love the way they juxtaposed the doodle-esque artwork with the old photos and video. I think my favorite part is where the illustrations of the buildings appear along the photograph of the barren landscape. It's also beautifully written:
ReplyDelete"I always found this comforting. We were all in the same boat -- or at least swimming nearby. Now, we're all in our own little boats, in our own little oceans. It seems so much harder to be collectively surprised, exhilarated."
Fantastic.
